I have been very anxious, wondering what this portfolio was going to be about. As an Alverno grad, I have already experienced the process, however, that was about 10 years ago. I appreciated being able to review others' portfolios. My nerves settled and I am beginning to get excited about putting it together.
In my group, we had a good discussion about the many components and design styles of the samples we came across. The great thing about having a portfolio is that you can tailor make it to accommodate your needs. We saw some created for professional usage and others for class/degree program studies.
I decided that I want my presentation to show the NETS as the focus. I, also, spent a great deal of time trying to get a better handle on the google sites tool we are going to be using. Now that I am comfortable with the site tool and have an idea about the organization of my portfolio, I am much more at ease about the final product. (Or else, I have just transferred that anxiety to the culminating experience proposal!!!!)
Erin, I created a portfolio as an undergrad when I graduated from Marian University (College at the time). I just disassembled and recycled it a couple of months ago as I tried to become less of a pack rat. I remember the process was quite tedious--using the copy machine in the college's library...so "old" school. I'm anxious to organize things online!
ReplyDeleteCurrently, I don't have a need to create a portfolio as I'm exempt from PI-34 nor am I job hunting...so I'm creating a portfolio solely to fulfill class requirements. I've decided to base my portfolio on the 10 Wisconsin teacher standards. I'm glad our meeting time last week was spent focusing on viewing and discussing a variety of portfolios.
How are your mission and vision statements coming along? Does your school ever reference or discuss your school vision or mission statement? I wasn't even aware of what ours addressed until I looked at it last week as I was trying to work with mine.
A few days time are all that's needed to relax enough to begin digesting our new assignments and become excited about the challenges they hold in store for us. Transferring anxiety to another outlet also works too;)
ReplyDeleteI, too, am mulling over different angles to approach my eportfolio as well as what elements to include in it, such as the NETS standards and the WI Teaching Standards. I will be doing this for my PI-34 requirements this year in addition to creating it for potential future employment opportunities. Keep your eyes on the prize and we'll be finished with this in no time.
Erin, this is my first portfolio and I am a bit nervous, too. I struggled with my Vision and Mission statements as I found I was splitting my focus between business learning and student learning. Finally, I took a look at NETS-T and that settled things down for me.
ReplyDeleteCompanies want employees with 21st century skills and NETS-T fits the bill. I think it is a good fit because it is what we have covered in the MEIT program and it exemplifies the characteristics of the learning professional I want to be.
I got a kick out of your comment about Google Sites. Once I felt comfortable with building a few pages I found myself thinking about the Culminating Project. Zoiks! Rut-Roh! I guess that's the next thing I need to pull together.
